August 8, 2016

It’s a monumental undertaking to safely transport more than 5,200 eligible students to dozens of schools each day. But, the Huntington School District’s transportation department does all it can to see that the task is accomplished in the most efficient way possible.

While most students are bussed to Huntington’s eight public schools, the district also transported school age residents to 38 parochial/private schools and 18 special needs schools on Long Island as required by law during the 2015/16 school year. The district most recently contracted for 54 large buses and 82 vans.

During an early June public meeting, Huntington School Board members appointed Vita Virgilio to serve as the district’s new school transportation coordinator, effective June 28. She replaces Kathy Cassella who left to take a position elsewhere in Suffolk.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Virgilio worked for WE Transport/Towne Bus for 10 years before becoming an investment counselor at David Learner Associates where she serviced over 200 accounts worth $21 million from January 2005 to December 2009.

Ms. Virgilio was an assistant dispatcher and executive administrative assistant at DBA Transportation in Bohemia from January 2010 to February 2015. Her responsibilities included identifying and solving all transportation problems and serving as the point of contact for parents and schools; motivating and teaching drivers and driver assistants; monitoring routes for efficiency and accuracy; covering driver shortages; serving as liaison for management with parents and schools; attending bid openings and correlating results to determine lowest responsible bidder; tracking trends in pricing and services; investigating billing discrepancies with school districts.

Huntington’s new transportation coordinator has most recently been employed by Nassau County as a buyer and contract manager. She oversaw contracts for numerous county agencies, wrote and executed formal and informal bids and prepared documents for the county legislature.

The Huntington School District’s transportation budget for the 2016/17 is about $10.3 million.
