Washington’s Leadership Team Develops Students’ Skills

Washington Primary School’s fourth grade student leadership team enjoyed another great year, closing out its activities with a party and fun games. The youngsters are now headed to fifth grade, but the group’s advisors are hopeful they will retain most of the skills they developed over the course of many months.

The past year’s team included all fourth graders in the building. Teachers Debbie Quiles and Vivian Joseph worked with the group on numerous projects in the building and out in the nearby community.

Students spent time learning many of the skills and qualities all good leaders possess. The fourth graders reported to Ms. Quiles’ room several times a month during their recess periods. They lent a hand at an assortment of school functions, spearheaded the collection of nearly three dozen large boxes of non-perishable food items for distribution throughout the community and even spent several hours visiting and playing games with residents of a local nursing home.

The fourth graders collaborated with Huntington High School’s new Interact club on a bottle and can collection initiative during the past school year, too. Money raised by returning the deposit containers has been earmarked for the purchase of a prosthetic limb for a Huntington area veteran and if there are funds remaining, Interact hopes to acquire a second limb for someone in need in Haiti.

Washington Principal Marsha Neville fully supports the mission of the fourth grade leadership team and she’s helped pave the way for some of the group’s activities, during the regular school day and after hours, too. “The team is a valuable piece of the overall program we offer to our students,” Mrs. Neville said.

As summer vacation nears its end, plans are already underway for the 2016/17 leadership team that will be comprised of Washington’s incoming fourth graders. “We can wait to start working with them,” Ms. Quiles said.
