December 09, 2016

Rudi Fasolino reignited his childhood interest in photography in a Huntington High School classroom. Now the senior is one of the top young artists among the 1,600 students in the building and his portfolio continues to gain strength and impress everyone that views it.

The teenager is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Studio Art 2-D Design Portfolio. Mr. Fasolino has studied with Huntington photography teacher Pamela Piffard for the past three years. It seems as if he acquires new skills on a daily basis and the quality of his work has skyrocketed in a relatively short period of time.

“I love the fauvist art movement,” Mr. Fasolino said. “Ansel Adams and Edward Weston are also photographers whose work I admire. I plan to keep experimenting with new ideas my whole life and to never settle into only one way to express myself.”

Photography teacher Pam Piffard on Rudi Fasolino . . .

“Rudi has grown tremendously over the past three years, both in maturity as well with his art. He is trying harder than ever. Rudi is constantly working to create beautiful art. He takes direction and advice well and takes it upon himself to learn as much as possible, asking questions and investigating ideas on his own. I see in him a newfound drive and dedication to develop himself into a truly successful artist. His portfolio is a beautiful display of his talents. This year Rudi has been coming into my classroom during his free time to help me out. I know I can count on him if I need a hand. I am very happy with how he conducts himself in class. He is a great example to his peers.”

Questions and Answers with Rudi Fasolino

Q: How old are you and what grade are you in?
Rudi Fasolino:
“I’m 17 and in twelfth grade.”

Q: How did you first get interested in photography?
Rudi Fasolino:
“As a kid, I was always interested in using cheap disposable cameras. My parents were very supportive of my photography even before I entered Huntington’s program. Introduction to Photography with Ms. Piffard was a really important class for me because it brought back my interest in photography and helped develop a lot of my skills.”

Q: Where do you get your ideas?
Rudi Fasolino: “Most of my ideas come from things around me like nature, movies I watched as a kid and things I did growing up. I also get ideas from Pinterest and other social media services like Instagram. My local art museums also serve as a good place to both gather ideas on making art, but also on how to present it.”

Q: Is there any specific type of photography you like best?
Rudi Fasolino: “I enjoy a lot of different types of photography, but this year I’m focusing on macro photography of organic objects, which will be the subject of my AP. I don’t like to box myself into only one form of photography though and I spend a lot of time experimenting with how I take my photos and how I edit them through Photoshop and other methods.”

Q: How has the Huntington photography program helped you with your love of photography?
Rudi Fasolino: “It’s been helpful that Huntington has a very in-depth three year photo course program, which has given me skill in digital photography, but also film photography. I’ve taken Intro to Photo, Advanced Photo and now I am in AP 2D.”

Q: Do you plan to continue with photography or go to school for it?
Rudi Fasolino: “I’m going to college for more of a sculpture/industrial design major, but I also want to obtain my BFA in teaching so that I could become a woodshop/art teacher. I will continue to practice photography in college and I will likely use it as a side job during college and beyond.”

Q: Are you involved with any other types of art?
Rudi Fasolino: “Besides photography I also do sculpture, fine art and woodwork.”

Q: Do you pursue art outside of school?
Rudi Fasolino: “Yes, I go to an out of school art program called Huntington Fine Arts after school and on weekends to develop my portfolio.”

Ms. Piffard said that Mr. Fasolino’s work will be entered into numerous competitions as the year progresses.
