Niche Ranks Huntington Near the Top in NYS

Niche has ranked Huntington High School among New York's best.

Huntington is listed among New York’s top public high schools in the Niche 2017 Best Public High Schools ranking.

Huntington High School is ranked No. 48 out of 1,187 New York public high schools by Niche, which bills itself as a “website that helps you discover the schools and neighborhoods that are right for you.” 

“I believe our current Niche ranking is another indicator that Huntington High School is continuing on the right path,” Principal Brenden Cusack said. “Every day, I see our students and staff striving to continuously improve and it is always encouraging to see these efforts recognized by others.” 

Huntington received an overall grade of A+. The school earned an A+ grade in the categories of academics, clubs and activities, college readiness and health and an A grade for teachers and diversity.

“We rigorously analyze dozens of public data sets and millions of reviews to produce comprehensive rankings, report cards, and profiles for every K-12 school, college, and neighborhood in the US,” according to Niche.

“While it is difficult for any list or ranking schema to paint a comprehensive picture of a school or district, the approach includes a range of academic and climate-related factors,” Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “Huntington High School has made a sizable jump on the 2017 list, as has the district as a whole, which reflects the great things are that are occurring daily and that students and families take a great deal of pride in their school experiences. I have said it before; Huntington can boast of the best students, staff and families in any school community!”

Huntington was ranked No. 27 for athletics out of 901 public high schools in the state based on the number of sports offered, participation rates for boys and girls, parents and student surveys and funding per student.

In the category of college readiness, Huntington earned the No. 53 spot among 1,165 public high schools in the state.

Huntington was ranked No. 153 in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education out of 829 New York metropolitan area high schools.

“Niche has the most comprehensive data available on U.S. schools and neighborhoods,” according to the company’s website. “We’re constantly updating and connecting millions of data points to produce new rankings and insights.”

Huntington High School is believed to be the oldest high school in the state offering a free public education. Its first graduating class of six was awarded diplomas in 1862. (Formation of the Huntington Union Free School District was authorized by the state legislature in 1857.)
