J. Taylor Finley Middle School’s dynamic eighth grade football team just keeps rolling. The Falcons turned back East Northport earlier this week, 28-14 to run their record to a perfect 4-0.
“Our offense continues to fire on all cylinders, but we struggle sometimes to make stops on defense,” said head coach Ronald Wilson, who is assisted by James Byrnes, Jr.
Finley jumped out to an 8-0 lead against East Northport and held a 15-7 halftime advantage. The Falcons outscored their previously undefeated foes by a 13-7 second half margin. The loss dropped East Northport to 3-1.
“Coach Byrnes once again made some adjustments up front to slow down the Tigers,” Wilson said. Finley hosts Northport Middle School today (Friday) at 4:30 p.m.
Finley’s rushing attack once again ruled supreme. The Falcons gained 294 yards on 23 carries. The team also completed three passes for another 129 yards.
Mekai Butts rushed seven times for 101 yards and a touchdown to lead the charge. Nasir Youngblood carried three times for 72 yards and a touchdown. Alex Bellissimo (five carries for 47 yards) and Chad Rowe (two carries for 33 yards) also turned in strong performances.
Torin Bograd went two-for-two passing, tossing a pair of touchdown bullets to Rowe. Frank Chirico completed a point after touchdown to Bellissimo.
The Finley-8 defense recorded 40 solo tackles, including three for a loss and also picked off an errant East Northport pass. Jayson Turner led the Falcons’ “iron curtain” with six tackles, including one that went for a loss and an interception. Trevan Meagher, Liam Hassett, Rowe and Youngblood had four tackles each. One of Rowe’s went for a loss. Kyeon Lyons, Andrew Florvil, Bellissimo and Butts had three tackles each. One of Butt’s went for a loss.
Finley-8 has two games remaining as it attempts to notch an undefeated season.
