Southdown Primary School honored its winter’s stars during a recent “splash” assembly. Teachers recognized more than three dozen outstanding students who sparkled during December and January. A new positive reinforcement system was also introduced to the youngsters crowding into the gymnasium and several other awards were presented, too.
Southdown is currently on a campaign to encourage positive behavior during indoor recess. Teacher Pamela Schwarting explained the new positive reinforcement system to students.
“Monitors will meet with Mrs. Schwarting and be trained in how to implement the system,” Principal Scott Oshrin said. “Funding has been earmarked for the purchase of new games and equipment so children are properly engaged during this time.”
The recent assembly also saw a staff member honored and the riders of an entire bus recognized All in all it was quite a show and the students seemed to love every minute of it.
“A new tradition was started,” Mr. Oshrin said. The staff ‘splash’ honoree will be permitted to park in the spot reserved for the principal until the next ‘splash’ assembly. Teacher aide Anne Johnson is the first staff member to garner the special parking privileges.
“We have a terrific staff and all are deserving of recognition and a shorter walk,” Mr. Oshrin said. “Mrs. Johnson is child centered and devoted to our mission of making sure every student is educated in a safe and nurturing environment.”
Students riding on Bus 5 were recognized for their outstanding behavior on the way to and from school each day. The youngsters were called down to the principal’s office for a special prize following the assembly.
The crowd filling the gymnasium gave each of the honorees a loud round of applause. The winter stars gathered together for a commemorative group photo with Mr. Oshrin before heading back to their respective classroom.
The “splash” assembly draws its name from Southdown’s mascot; the dolphin. Students are awarded “splashes” for displaying positive behavior in the classroom and around the building, including being kind to others, demonstrating proper behavior in hallways and even lifting the spirits of someone feeling a little bit down.
One Southdown student is selected monthly from every class in the building for formal recognition at the “splash” assembly. The school considers these youngsters to be its stars of the month.
