Senior Kevin Lawrence scored 17 points to lead the Huntington boys’ basketball team over host Newfield in a Suffolk League III game, 54-50.

Trailing 11-10 after the first quarter, the Blue Devils gained the upper hand with a 13-2 run in the second frame. Leading 23-13 at halftime, Huntington outscored Newfield in the third quarter by a 12-8 margin to pad their advantage.

Newfield staged a furious rally in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Blue Devils, 29-19. Huntington managed to hold on for a four point victory and gain its fifth victory of the winter.

Taqwan Gooden-Hill had 15 points. Mike Abbondandelo scored 10 points and converted a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to put the game out of reach. James Shea and Nick Inman had six points each.

Huntington scored 13 points from the free throw line during the game.

Katie Seccafico Paces Blue Devils

The Huntington girls’ basketball team cruised past visiting Newfield, 43-11. Katie Seccafico’s eight points and five rebounds led the Blue Devils.

Huntington built an insurmountable advantage over the first two quarters. Emma Petrizzi had seven points and six assists. Nicole Leslie scored five points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Eleven Blue Devil players scored in the game. Alexandra Heuwetter had five points. Jordan Forte and Torre Palmer scored four points each. Abby Maichin had three points and Shannon Maloney, Paige Lennon and Charlotte Maggio each scored two points. Tara Wilson scored a point from the free throw line.

County Wrestling Tournament

The Huntington wrestling team will send nine wrestlers to the Section XI Division I wrestling tournament this weekend at Suffolk-West in Brentwood.

Ryan Mock, Ryan Stieve, Sean Flick, Charlie Gadson, Khari McNeil, Tazedon Smith, Aedan McDonald, Charlie O’Rourke and Robert Simon are all head to the county mat tournament.

The action will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. with pigtail and preliminary round matches and continue with the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. Consolation round bouts will run from 3-6:30 p.m.

Wrestling resumes on Sunday with the semifinals slated for 9:30 a.m. Matches for third and fifth place will be held beginning at 2:30 p.m. The parade of champions featuring this year’s All-County matmen will be held at 5:45 p.m. following by the county championship matches.

Finley Winter Season II

The second winter athletic season is now underway at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. The wrestling team is coached by Michael Marinello and Omar Santiago. The two girls’ basketball teams are being guided by Phil Lowe and Timothy Madden.

Blue Devil Girls’ Basketball Senior Day

The Huntington girls’ basketball team will hold a Senior Day ceremony on Thursday (February 9) prior to the Blue Devils’ Suffolk League III game against Smithtown East.

Huntington head coach Michael Kaplan will speak to the crowd about each of the seniors, including Anna Gulizio, Shannon Maloney, Torre Palmer, Emma Petrizzi and Tara Wilson.

Blue Devils in Millrose Games

The Huntington boys’ track team will compete in the Millrose Games at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in Manhattan on Saturday.

The Blue Devils qualified for the Millrose Games finals last month in the 4x400m relay, when they won the Suffolk division of the qualifying event.

The Blue Devil relay team consisting of Jonathan Smith, Lawrence Leake, Shane McGuire and Kyree Johnson ran the event in 3:23.47, safely ahead of any of the other 10 Suffolk teams competing in the race.

County Track Championships – State Qualifying Meet

The Huntington boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams will compete in the Section XI individual county championship/state qualifying meet on Monday, February 13 beginning at 5 p.m. at Suffolk-West in Brentwood.

The Blue Devil boys’ squad is expecting to qualify several athletes for the state championships, which will be held on Saturday, March 4 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island for the first time.

The New Balance Indoor Nationals are set for Friday, March 10 in Manhattan.

Blue Devils Fall at Copiague, 49-39

The Huntington girls’ basketball team failed to hold onto a lead at first place Copiague and fell to the Eagles, 49-39.

The Blue Devils trained 12-9 after the first quarter, but then outshot Copiague over the next eight minutes, 12-4 to grab a 21-16 halftime lead.

The Eagles rallied in the second half, outscoring Huntington by a 33-18 margin. Alexandra Heuwetter led the Blue Devils with 14 points. Emma Petrizzi had 10 points and Anna Gulizio scored nine points. Nicole Leslie had three points and Charlotte Maggio had two points. Katie Seccafico scored a point from the free throw line.
