The J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grade boys’ basketball team held its own against a set of very strong opponents this winter.

Captained by Trevan Meagher and Kyle Green, the Falcons were coached by Timothy Madden. The 14 player roster compiled a 5-5 record, including three victories by five points or less.

“I am most proud of how well this team improved throughout the season,” Madden said. “Everyone on the team contributed to our success.”

Madden cited Meagher, Chris Segreti and Torin Bograd as his top players. The roster also included Aaron Chin, Frank Chirico, Zachary Gordon, Liam Hassett, Charles Kiviat, Kyeon Lyons, Ethan Mcguinness, Michael Quinn, Joseph Shea and Isaiah Williams. Nate Deegan was the team manager.

Meagher averaged six points per game from his center position. “Trevan is a force in the middle of our defense,” Madden. “He blocked several shots a game.”

Bograd, who played shooting guard for Finley, averaged five points. “He has a tremendous work ethic and came up big during ‘crunch time’ in several games,” Madden said.

Segreti also averaged five points per game. “Chris is a very good point guard and an intelligent player,” Madden said.

Finley topped Candlewood (36-26 and 31-29), Lindenhurst (32-28 and 52-33) and West Hollow (40-35). The Falcons dropped games to Commack (54-28, 64-36 and 38-31), Candlewood (43-33) and West Hollow (52-27).

“Early in the season we lost to West Hollow at home, 52-27,” Madden said. “We had several turnovers, didn’t play well on defense and missed shots we should have made. The second time we played them we won, 40-35. We played great team defense, passed the ball extremely well and pulled out a great win.”

Many of the current eighth graders are expected to play on Huntington’s junior varsity team next winter.
