Mock (34-5) pinned Smithtown East’s Connor Malley (1:35) and Brentwood’s Denis Velasquez (1:42) before falling to eventual county runner-up Jacob Borland of Northport in the semifinals, 4-3.

The Blue Devil mat star grabbed 3-0 and 1-0 decisions in the consolation bracket over Islip’s Chris Delisle and Velasquez in a rematch for third place.

H-ton Girls’ Basketball in Playoffs on Thursday

The Huntington girls’ basketball team will host Eastport-South Manor in a Suffolk Class AA tournament out-bracket game on Thursday (February 16) at 5 p.m. in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Huntington (14-6) is seeded No. 14 in the tournament. Eastport-South Manor (12-8) is No. 19. The winner of the game will play on Friday at No. 3 Central Islip (18-2). Tickets for both games will be sold at the door for $4.

Huntington is led by co-captains Anna Gulizio and Emma Petrizzi, All-Conference junior Alexandra Heuwetter, junior Katie Seccafico and seniors Torre Palmer and Tara Wilson.

Gaffney Hurdles to All-County Honors

Huntington senior Ryann Gaffney earned All-County honors at Monday night’s Suffolk individual championships in Brentwood.

Gaffney placed fourth in the 55m high hurdles, going wire to wire in 8.75 seconds to equal her best time this year. She finished 13/100ths of a second behind third place finisher Hanna Battaglini, a West Islip senior.

Had Gaffney placed third in a time of 8.74 seconds, she would have qualified for the state championships on March 4 at Staten Island.

“Ryann is a tough competitor and she had a great year,” assistant coach Shawn Anderson said.

Blue Devils Set New Suffolk Records

Kyree Johnson and Lawrence Leake set new Section XI state qualifying meet records in their respective events this past Monday night at Suffolk-West in Brentwood.

Johnson broke a 17 year old record in the 300m dash when he turned in a time of 34.80 seconds, smashing the previous mark of 34.96 set by David Owens of John H. Glenn in 2000.

Leake also shattered a 17 year old mark in the 600m dash, finishing in 1:21.70 to break the previous record of 1:21.99 set in 2000 by Brentwood’s Greg Santiago.

Lawrence Drops 26 Points, but H-ton Falls

The Huntington boys’ basketball team dropped the final game of the season, falling at Smithtown East on Saturday, 65-54.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 23-14 first quarter advantage, before Smithtown East (7-13) came roaring back, outscoring Huntington (5-15) in the second quarter, 20-6 to take a 34-29 lead at halftime.

The Blue Devils cut their deficit to just two points by the end of the third quarter at 45-43. But, the Bulls once again rallied, going on a 20-11 run over the final eight minutes to lock-up the victory.

Senior Kevin Lawrence scored 26 points in his final game in a Huntington uniform. Taqwan Gooden-Hill had 16 points and James Shea added four points. Mike Abbondandelo and Nick Inman scored three points each. Gerard Federici had two points.

Alum Sam Lynch Scores 10 Goals for Notre Dame

Huntington High School alum Samantha Lynch enjoyed a magical weekend. The former Blue Devil great scored four goals and added an assist to help Notre Dame topple visiting Liberty University on Friday, 18-2. Then she notched an amazing six goals on Saturday to lift the Fighting Irish to a 24-9 victory over Detroit Mercy.

Against Liberty, the Huntington grad won a draw control and scooped up a pair of groundballs. She also caused a Liberty turnover. Lynch had five draw controls on Saturday against Detroit Mercy.

The Notre Dame freshman enters this week with 10 goals and an assist for 11 points. Lynch plays midfield and wears No. 33.

Alum Anna Tesoriero Gets Win in Goal

Huntington grad Anna Tesoriero picked up the win in goal as the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team edged host Towson University in the first game of the season last Saturday, 10-9.

Tesoriero is one of the best goalies in NCAA Division I. She turned in an exceptional freshman campaign, starting all 21 games. The former Blue Devil great played 1058.19 minutes and made 107 saves while winning America East First Team All-Conference and All-Rookie team honors. Her goals against average of 6.07 per game was the best by a Division I freshman since 2002. She notched a record of 15-4 in goal for the Seawolves.

Last weekend against Towson, Tesoriero stopped six shots and caused a pair of turnovers.

Blue Devils Capture Silver Medals at Millrose Games

The Huntington boys’ indoor track team’s 4x400m relay finished second in the Millrose Games at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in Manhattan.

Kyree Johnson, Lawrence Leake, Mark Rafuse and Anthony Joseph turned in a time of 3:21.70, which place the team second behind Elmont, which ran 3:19.99.
