The new school year is already shaping up to be one for the history books for the Huntington High School Blue Devil marching band.
Huntington School Board members approved the band’s request to travel to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida next February for specialized classes and a parade down the park’s Main Street, USA.
The Blue Devil marching band is entering its 83rd season. It was founded in 1934 by teacher James Cloyd Doty, an Ohio native and Oberlin College graduate who found his way to Huntington High School in 1924.
The band will travel to Walt Disney World Resort from February 19-22 during the school district’s mid-winter recess. A field trip application was approved by the Huntington School Board at a public meeting on Tuesday, July 11.
Approximately 110 students and 11 staff members will participate in the trip, which will be led by band directors Jessica Castaneda and Brian Stellato. The trek will be privately funded. Activities include workshops presented by Disney professional instructors and performers, including color guard and band instrumental sessions and a Walt Disney World parade.
“Through participation in the ‘You’re Instrumental’ workshop, students will sight-read, prepare and record a performance of a special Disney music selection in a professional music studio,” states the field trip application that was submitted to district officials. Marching band and color guard members will rehearse and perform a simulated Disney special event production in the ‘Auxiliration’ workshop. Here, students will learn and refine skills necessary to be a part of a dedicated, talented unit. As part of the Disney ‘Performing Arts on Stage,’ the entire marching band and color guard will perform, marching down Main Street, USA in the pageantry and pride of the grand Disney tradition.”
The Huntington Blue Devil Band has marched in some of the biggest and most well-known parades in the country since its founding. It has also performed on the field at several of the most famous stadiums in the world. This marks the 15th season that Huntington will be competing in the New York State Field Band Conference.
Katie Riley, Mardnie Mentor and Jamie Rosenbauer will serve as the Blue Devils’ drum majors. Adina Kirkland is set to be the field major.
The band will once again march in Huntington’s Homecoming Day parade and perform at halftime of several football games. The Blue Devils will also perform their field show in the following competitions:
• September 17: Brentwood
• September 24: Copiague
• September 30: Malverne
• October 1: Huntington High School home show
