Five Huntington players and two coaches were honored at this week’s Suffolk County Girls’ Basketball Coaches Assn. awards dinner before a crowd of 700 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.
Anna Gulizio and Alexandra Heuwetter were named to the All-County team. Emma Petrizzi captured All-Conference recognition. Petrizzi and Tara Wilson also garnered Academic All-County honors. Nicole Leslie was selected to receive a camp scholarship.
Blue Devil varsity head coach Michael Kaplan was honored for winning his 100th game this past season. It is believed he reached the century mark faster than any other Suffolk girls’ basketball coach in history. Huntington JV coach Fred Vasselman was named League III JV Coach of the Year.
“We are so proud of these players and all of their teammates,” Kaplan said. “They practiced hard and gave us everything they had during games. Plus they are just plain great people. It’s tough to be losing Anna, Emma, Tara and their fellow seniors Shannon Maloney and Torre Palmer to graduation. They each made coming to practice fun. We are really going to miss them.”
Huntington finished second in the Suffolk League III standings with a 10-4 mark. The Blue Devils compiled an overall record of 14-7.
Huntington is 71-13 over the past four years. The Blue Devils had their streak of three consecutive league titles snapped this past winter. Kaplan hopes to start a new run of titles next season.
Gulizio enjoyed a sensational career with the Blue Devils over four varsity seasons. As a senior, the 5’7 guard averaged 10 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals per game and led the team in assists and field goals.
The 5’9 Heuwetter returned from an early season injury to average 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals per game. The teenager led Huntington in three-pointers, free throws and scoring.
Huntington varsity assistant coach Marissa Bergmann Kaplan organized this week’s huge dinner in her role as treasurer of the county basketball coaches association. Parents of the Blue Devil players were among those filling the large ballroom.
