Once a member of the Huntington High School boys’ soccer program always a member. That’s the philosophy of Blue Devil head coach John Pagano, who organized an alumni game that played out in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium last Saturday.
This marked the tenth annual alumni contest since Pagano instituted it as a way to get past players involved again in the program. It’s usually held on the Blue Devil Stadium turf field, but last weekend’s rainy weather forced the move indoors.
Thirty alumni players suited up for this year’s game. The former players spanned many years, beginning with the Class of 2001. The lively affair brought out the competitive nature in everyone.
“It was a great game and a lot of fun,” Pagano said. The Huntington coach has developed a perennially strong varsity program. With so many skilled players in the pipeline, the Blue Devils are expected to field tough teams for many years to come.
Alums Evert Coto, Jon Tasman and Peter Delfino shared this year’s MVP awards. An after-party was held at Meehan’s on New York Avenue in Huntington village.
“I want to express thanks to Tim Pillion and the Huntington Booster Blub for all of their support throughout the years, especially on our tenth anniversary,” Pagano said. “I’d like to also thank Coach Steve Henry for his vital assistance.”
Pagano strives to keep Blue Devil alums involved in the program. Players from all graduating classes are welcome to reconnect with the Huntington boys’ soccer program. Send a message to Pagano at [email protected] to be kept in the loop about future alumni events.
