The Huntington varsity boys’ volleyball team played for the love of the game this fall.
It wasn’t a championship year or even a winning season, but it sure was a lot of fun for the 14 Blue Devils who gave the team everything they had whenever they stepped on the court.
Captained by seniors Nick Inman, Chris Martin and David Fredericks and coached by Todd Donaghy, Huntington compiled a record of 0-14. But no title winning team could match the spirit and positive attitude displayed by the Blue Devils.
“We weren’t the most talented team in the county, but if we were to measure success in terms of growth from the beginning through the end of the season we were second to none,” Donaghy said. “We competed and played good team volleyball.”
Inman captured All-Conference honors while Martin, freshman CJ Kiviat and sophomore Matt Girimonti were all named All-Conference honorable mention.
Huntington’s middle hitter, Inman topped off the season by notching career highs in “kills” in three consecutive matches with 17, 18 and 20. The teenager also led the team in blocks and digs.
“Nick is an outstanding player who led the team on offense and defense,” Donaghy said. “He’s a very skilled player.”
Kiviat was second on the team in both “kills” and digs. “He has the potential to be our next All-County selection,” said Donaghy about the talented freshman. “He did an outstanding job as a ninth grader and will only continue to improve.”
While Huntington lost many matches by lopsided 3-0 scores, the Blue Devils were usually very competitive within the games themselves.
“This was a great group of boys who worked hard,” Donaghy said. “They stayed positive throughout the season and most importantly, had fun despite the lack of wins. “It’s nice to win, but they showed me that winning isn’t everything.”
Martin led Huntington in service aces while junior Sam Roberts tallied a team high number of assists.
Fredericks, Inman, Martin and Norman Martinez will all be graduating next June. Girimonti, Kiviat, Roberts, Benjamin Collins, James Duffy, Renato Erek, Candido Martinez, Joseph Mead, Raul Orozco and Richard Rongo are all eligible to return next fall.
