Emma Greenhill enjoys playing lacrosse so much and she’s so good at it that the next step in her career seems obvious. The Huntington High School senior has signed an NCAA Division I letter of intent to attend James Madison University in Virginia and play on the lax team there.

Ms. Greenhill considered Brown University and the University of Connecticut before ultimately deciding that James Madison University was a perfect fit for her in the classroom, on the lacrosse field and socially, too.

“Ironically, I never heard of or really considered contacting JMU until after one of my summer tournaments,” Ms. Greenhill said. “But after speaking with the head coach numerous times, meeting the team and visiting the campus, I was sold. The team is not only extremely competitive, but a family and II think that’s very important. Also the relationship between the coaching staff and the players helped me make my decision. They respect one another, but are also able to joke around and not be so intense all the time.”

The senior went on visits, read as much as she could about the colleges she was considering, spoke with coaches and players at each school and talked it over with her parents many times before reaching a final decision.

“I really wanted to go somewhere that challenged me athletically and academically and JMU fits me perfectly,” Ms. Greenhill said. “And to top things off, the campus is absolutely beautiful and located in such a pretty area.”

The senior is coming off a fabulous fall soccer season. She returned to the sport after an absence and immediately became a key player on the field. Ms. Greenhill isn’t playing on an athletic team this winter. “I’m just focusing on training for the spring to hopefully have a great senior season.”

James Madison University is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The school enrolls more than 21,000 students. Ms. Greenhill isn’t sure what she will pursue as an academic major. “I’m definitely thinking about possibly applying to the business school,” she said.

The teenager is a member of the new women’s empowerment club at the high school. She’s popular with her classmates and teammates and is respected by her teachers and coaches.

The teenager will always remember her high school years. “I couldn’t have asked for a better experience,” Ms. Greenhill said. “I’ve made such great memories with friends that I’ll have forever. Huntington is such an accepting and open community. I’m lucky to have gone here and experienced what I have. The past four years has shaped who I am and led me to grow as an individual and I couldn’t be happier to have done that in Huntington High School.”
