As they breeze through the second month of the 2017/18 school year, Jefferson Primary School students have cheerfully settled into their daily routines. The youngsters are energetic, enthusiastic and more inquisitive than ever before. They love to learn new things.
Jefferson Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide is happy with how the year has been progressing and how eagerly students on every grade level are going about their business around the building.
Jefferson students are provided with a comprehensive academic program, from exceptional classroom instruction to art, music, physical education, library and computer classes as well as plenty of other activities.
The students attending Jefferson have always been filled with pride for their school. Alumni have moved on to many of the finest colleges and universities in the country and into every possible career field.
In the opening weeks of the new school year, students and teachers have been very busy. “I held a school-wide assembly and presented appropriate behaviors that exemplify being safe, responsible and respectful citizens,” Ms. Capitulo-Saide said. But, that’s only scratching the surface about what’s been going on at Jefferson.
“The teachers, staff and I have been working diligently on our three school-wide goals,” the principal said. Ms. Capitulo-Saide has been collaborating with faculty members to further enhance classroom instruction and maximize learning while lifting academic performance across the board.
Jefferson’s school-wide goals for this year include:
• By June 2018, 100 percent of students in grades K-4 will be engaged in daily Journeys reading instruction. “This fall, all K-4 teachers participated in professional development revolved around our newly adopted Journeys program,” Ms. Capitulo-Saide said. “All K-4 students participate in daily English Language Arts lessons utilizing the Journeys program.”
• By June 2018, 100 percent of students will demonstrate progress toward meeting the Common Core Learning Standards as evidenced by an increase of the results on the Engage NY math module assessments from fall to spring. “K-4 students participate in daily mathematics lessons utilizing the Engage NY math modules,” Ms. Capitulo-Saide said. “Assessment results will be collected and analyzed to measure student learning.”
• By June 2018, the school will develop a more collaborative partnership with families, as measured by an increase in parent attendance at school events. “We will increase opportunities for parent involvement in school activities,” Ms. Capitulo-Saide said. “New this year, the school created communicates with families via Twitter @JeffersonHUFSD. Plans for a parent workshop on Thursday, October 19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. are aligned to our parent engagement goal.”
Since 1962 when it swung open its doors for the first time, Jefferson School and its students, teachers, support staff and parents in any given year have always risen to every challenge that has come their way. With such a long history of success, this year’s three goals seem certain to be met.
