Steli Vlahos has traveled across the world, but it is right here that she has loved growing up and the Huntington High School community has loved the talented junior right back.

Ms. Vlahos came to Huntington from Floral Park as a second grader and she started making friends that first day at Washington Primary School. Since then she has been a standout in every possible way.

The teenager earns exceptional grades, plays violin in the high school orchestra, serves as an administrative assistant in the student government and is a member of the Blue Devil varsity volleyball team.

A member of the high school’s Art Honor Society and Social Studies Honor Society chapters, Ms. Vlahos also finds time to play on an outside club volleyball team.

The teenager has traveled across the country and the world and she is planning even more treks in the near future. “I travel to Greece every other summer and in between each year I go somewhere else,” Ms. Vlahos said. “Last summer I went to Hawaii and California, and three years ago to Mexico. I often go see my family in Indiana. This year I am going to Italy and Greece.”

Ms. Vlahos’ favorite teachers include Jordan Schessler, Pamela Piffard and Paige Tyree Furman.

“Steli is an amazing girl,” Ms. Piffard said. “She has a great attitude and carries herself with a maturity beyond her years. She works hard, is always creative and has incredible talent.”

The junior’s academic schedule includes classes in Advanced Placement US History, Regents English, Regents Physics, Algebra/Trigonometry, Advanced Photography, Health, Psychology and Symphony Orchestra.

“I’ve known Steli since she was in eighth grade,” Ms. Furman said. “I now interact with her through student government and I just love working with her. She’s super creative and comes up with great ideas for the group. I’m looking forward to planning the prom with her. The Class of 2020 is lucky to have her representing them in student government.”

The teenager’s closest friends include Cat Jamison, Maddie Reed, Izzy Toscano and Alexandra Gerbavsits.

“Steli is one of my greatest friends,” Ms. Gerbavsits said. “She is always has my back and puts a smile on my face every day.”

Ms. Vlahos and her friends have a very tight bond with one another. “Steli and I have been extremely close for many years now,” Ms. Jamison said. “She’s an amazing friend and works very hard in everything she does.”

The teenager and all of her friends are high achievers. “Steli and I met in fifth grade in Mrs. [Dina] Telesco’s class,” Ms. Reed said. “We’ve been able to grow as friends and individuals ever since then. In seventh grade we both played volleyball together, I consider myself super lucky to have been able to call her an amazing friend and teammate for several years now.”

Looking ahead, the current junior has already settled on the direction she wants to head for college and career. “I want to go to Indiana University and become a nurse practitioner,” Ms. Vlahos said.

Nearly halfway through the school year, Ms. Vlahos is doing well in everything. She is very well liked around the building and she’s taking advantage of every opportunity.

“I’ve loved Huntington and growing up here,” Ms. Vlahos said. “Every year gets better and better.”
