Sarah Glascock is an artist and a really great one at that. She wants to make it her career so it was important for the Huntington High School senior to find just the right college to pursue her goals. She found it at SUNY New Paltz.

“I chose New Paltz because of its B.F.A. Excelled art program and education focused on individuality,” Ms. Glascock said. “I also chose it because of its closeness to New York City, which will allow me to have internships. Lastly, I chose it because of its study abroad opportunities.”

The teenager plans to study graphic design with a “probable” minor in marketing, she said. SUNY New Paltz has an undergraduate enrollment of more than 6,700. The college offers nearly 100 undergraduate degree programs.

“I almost went to RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology),” Ms. Glascock said. “However, New Paltz is closer and has an amazing town.”

The senior has played trombone in the Blue Devil marching band for the past five years. She’s a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Art Honor Society and the English Honor Society.

Ms. Glascock is taking five Advanced Placement courses this year, including AP Literature and Composition, AP Government and Politics, AP Environmental Science, AP Studio in Art and AP Microeconomics. She has taken nine AP courses during high school.

“I hope to work as an art director at a company when I’m older,” Ms. Glascock said. “If not, I could get a master’s degree in marketing and work my way up to becoming a marketing manager. I could also do free-lance work on the side.”

The teenager has developed a particularly close bond with high school art teacher Kristin Singer. “I have been a student of Mrs. Singer for four years and it is because of her that I decided to pursue art as a career,” Ms. Glascock said.

“It has been a pleasure to have Sarah as a student in my art classes,” Mrs. Singer said. “During the past four years, she has matured as an artist and has developed her personal voice in her art work. I am excited that she is pursuing computer graphics as her college major and am certain she will succeed in her dream to work as a graphic designer.”

Ms. Glascock was honored earlier this spring as a Distinguished Senior after compiling a grade average of at least a 90 during every semester of high school.

One of the highlights of her high school years has been winning the New York State Field Band Conference championship with the Blue Devil marching band, Ms. Glascock said.

“While high school has been a relatively normal experience for me, it has been during this time that I really grew as a person,” Ms. Glascock said. “I became more politically involved, let my creative side flow and started to come out of my shell.”
