Here’s something promises to be really fun for Huntington UFSD girls in grades 5-8. The Blue Devil softball coaches have organized a free clinic on Monday, January 28 in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School gym from 3:30-5 p.m.

Participants need not be experienced softball players. All that is needed is enthusiasm and an interest in having a good time. There will be instruction in various softball skills along with drills and fun games. No pre-registration is required. Just come to the STEM School gym on January 28.

Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School physical education John Walsh, who is the longtime Blue Devil varsity softball head coach is coordinating the clinic. Participants should wear sneakers and bring their softball glove if they have one. Don’t have a glove? No problem. You are welcome, too.

The Blue Devil softball program is looking to develop more interest in the sport across Huntington UFSD. The district sponsors a team for seventh and eighth graders at J. Taylor Finley Middle School as well as junior varsity and varsity squads at Huntington High School. All girls in grades 7-12 are invited to join the fun and tryout for one of the teams.

Coach Walsh has been a Huntington physical education teacher since September 1994. A graduate of East Islip High School, he earned an undergraduate degree at SUNY Brockport and a master’s degree at Stony Brook University. He has coached boys’ volleyball on the middle school and high school levels and varsity girls’ soccer and softball. He is also a CPR and First Aid trainer.

The clinic on Monday, January 28 will cover all types of skills from running and throwing to fielding and batting. Participants will learn more about how to be a good teammate as well as how to be a leader.

Coach Walsh hopes this will be the first of several winter clinics for girls interested in softball. More sessions will be announced soon.
