The Huntington High School girls’ junior varsity basketball team completed a fine season with an overall record of 12-8.

Coached by Huntington alum Shea Scully, the team was captained by Lisa Martin and Regan Sansiviero. The squad went 9-7 in league play.

The Blue Devils were led by eighth graders Asyria Rios and Meg Morrisroe and freshmen Shaneek Shand and Sansiviero.

Rios starred at forward while Morrisroe and Sansiviero were standout guards. Shand ran the point.

“Every player on this year’s team brought important skills to the table,” Scully said. “We became such a close-knit team. I can’t wait to see what they all bring next season.”

Huntington was very competitive throughout the season. After winning their first game, 40-5 the Blue Devils went on to capture six of the next seven contests.

Huntington was 11-4 after topping Smithtown East on January 25 by a 32-26 score. The Blue Devils struggled the rest of the way, dropping four their final five games, including two excruciatingly close contests.

Huntington fell to Newfield, 40-39 and dropped a 29-27 verdict to West Islip. The two losses stung because the Blue Devils had earlier topped Newfield, 37-20 and West Islip, 33-23.

The team’s roster also included sophomore Kemberlin Hernandez-Veliz; freshmen Ashley Genao and Yanira Rivera Ronquillo; and eighth graders Kaci McDonald and Erin Scanlon.

Several of the players from this year’s JV team are expected to be future Blue Devil varsity stars.
